This is not the first time this has happened. Unfortunately, I have swung back and forth between upscale point and shoots and mid-range DSLR cameras. I really like the photo quality of my DSLR, but I hate how heavy they are. Eventually, I find reasons to leave them at home or at best not bring the lenses. The thing is I am blessed to travel the world and know a fair thing about how to capture a good image, and I often find the point and shoot wanting for aperture and focal length.
So, I'm on the hunt again for the perfect camera. When looking for a camera your decision is all about managing compromises, weight, size, aperture, full or crop sensor, megapixels, iso, etc all equaling potential image quality and ideally staying within your budget.
At this point, I'm going to try a compact Sony. I've decided between the Sony Alpha a6300 or a6500. It's small enough to fit in a purse (unfortunately not a pocket) and will allow me to get some really wide angle shots. The interchangeable lenses will allow the camera to grow with me should I choose to invest in other lenses in the future.

I have decided on one thing: I'm not going to buy the camera with the kit lens. I am going to buy the body and the lenses I intend to use separately. Why would I make this choice? Well, I am buying the camera to improve upon the image quality of my Sony RX100 IV. This camera has incredible image quality but I am limited by the focal length of this point and shoot. Why make the upgrade to interchangeable lenses only to use a very OK lens. I'm not sure this would be an overall improvement.
I am going to buy two lenses. The Sony 10-18mm and the Sony 18-135mm. I am SUPER excited about the 10-18. I think I will use this mostly for landscapes, street photography and indoor spaces when I just can't back up. I decided on the 18-135 because I will undoubtedly be in situations when I don't want an ultra wide angle lens.
The downside? I will need to carry two lenses with me and that's just more weight, more time, more chance of breaking something.
I a planning a trip to the Bolivian Salt flats to photograph the flamingos, so now is as good as time as any to start the upgrade.
